Comet Ison Story:What,When,Who,How?
What: C/2012 S1 "Comet Ison"
When: Comet Ison was Discovered last SEPTEMBER 21 2012
Who: Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok (Russian)
Copyright © 2012 by A. Novichonok (ISON-Kislovodsk Observatory, Russia)
HOW: They discovered it using a 40-cm (16-inch) telescope in Russia
The telescope is part of the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON), a group of observatories for observing asteroids and space debris. Comets are usually named after their discoverers, but because the initial report from Nevski and Novichonok did not indicate a cometary appearance for this object, and because other observers discovered it as cometary, the comet was named ISON after the telescope used to discover it.
